Must share this inspiring video. 😌😊What if the experiences from which we most desperately try to shelter our children are the very ones that will enable them to be successful, joyful, and capable citizens of our world? What if, rather than telling our children to be careful, we instead put aside our own anxieties and recognize that there can be no learning and no innovation without risk?

Here is some information about why funky socks and why March 21 for World Down Syndrome Day. Don’t forget you can visit our Frankford playgroup today to chat with mom Candice and learn more!Happy World Down Syndrome Day to all the amazing families raising kiddos with that extra magical chromosome! So why is World Down Syndrome Day celebrated on March 21?

Individuals with Down syndrome have 3 of their 21st chromosome instead of 2 - as such, the 21st of 3rd month (March) is World Down Syndrome Day (3/21 - get it?!). Celebrate with us by wearing funky socks! 🧦🧦 + 🌈

This image is a visual representation of chromosomes - as you can see, each set of chromosomes look like pairs of (colourful/funky) socks! You can see that extra 21st chromosome on this visual, meaning the person's genetic makeup is that of someone with Down syndrome.

So please join us in spreading awareness and starting conversations by wearing brightly coloured/funky socks. But even if you don’t do the sock thing, have a quick conversation with your child or a friend about Down syndrome and disability.

Last year, my own daughter (who has Down syndrome), opted to wear PLAIN WHITE SOCKS on March 21 despite all my best efforts and convincing... because she is fierce and independent and 100% her own person.

And really, that's what this day is about - raising awareness that those with Down syndrome are unique, human, and when given the opportunity and supports they require, capable of being independent and 100% their own person, just like everyone else.

So reach out to a family or individual or organization involved with Down syndrome and get to know these inspiring, chromosomally enhanced people. You will be better for it! And ultimately, awareness and love and understanding is what it's all about.
