Sssss goes the Snake!

We love how our Wildwood EarlyON program creates opportunities that enable children to explore, wonder about, care for and make connections to the natural environment.

We also love how the parents and caregivers in our community participate and make meaningful contributions to the children’s learning. Lily’s dad Josh is one of those engaged parents!

His knowledge and snake handling skills allowed for a captivating investigation of a water snake for Lily and her peers. Fascinated with how the snake coiled around his arm and regurgitated two small fish, the children patiently waited until Josh deemed it safe for the children to come close enough to touch. Healthy risk plays an important role in children’s development and learning.

Learning in nature is a dynamic and emergent process that builds on children’s natural curiosity about their world. What captures a child’s attention? What do they notice? What pulls them in? How about a snake?

Lily’s dad helped to facilitate learning by providing an experience that enabled children to investigate, reflect and seek answers to their questions. Thanks Josh for setting the stage for a small group of very young children to begin navigating risk in small doses!

How do children demonstrate they are competent and capable of complex thinking?

At Deseronto EarlyON program, we think that the materials and experiences offered to children can support their competency and theories. In this short video, 3 year old Chelsea investigates how her rubber ducky can fill with water and how her squeezing action can then release that water to make bubbles. The educators didn’t show her how to create such fun, but allowed her enough time to explore and test out her theory. Her discovery has captured the attention of 18 month old Emerson who likes her idea and lingers with anticipation for a turn. Children learn from each other.

Our programs provide environments and experiences to engage all children in active, creative and meaningful exploration and inquiry through play. Drop in for a visit!

It's Spring! Disconnect & get out there!   Children are more disconnected from the natural world than ever before.
